To Kill a Mockingbird

We are still working on our novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. We have finished through chapter 8. Honors classes have finished through chapter 10. There is a lot going on in the book, and it can get confusing. On my next post, I am going to add a link to a youtube channel that is devoted to To Kill a Mockingbird. On the page, you will find detailed summaries of each chapter of the book as well as character summaries. I hope this will help refresh you memory on what has happened so far, and you can use these as we continue to read to help clarify things that may seem a little confusing.

Week of 9/24

It's HOMECOMING week! How exciting is it to have our first taste of high school homecoming week? On Friday of last week, we worked in groups to read and summarize seven different letters that were written around the 1930s. We presented our summaries to the class, and Mrs. Pace told us that these letters were all related in some way. We predicted what the situation was. This week, we have been learning exactly what the situation is. We are watching a video on The Scottsboro Boys. This is important historically, because these events inspired the writer Harper Lee to write the famous book To Kill a Mockingbird, which we will begin reading after fall break. We are also working on some replacement packets to replace some of our low grades on the standards we have covered. We should all have spectacular grades when we finish our extra practice. These are due on Thursday by 3:30 because it is the last day of the grading period. Honors students please do not forget to get your copy of To Kill a Mockingbird by 10/8.

Week of 9/10 and 9/17

Boy have we had a busy couple of weeks. We spent most of the week of 9/10 getting trained on the technology available here at SCHS as well as how to access our email. Mrs. Evans showed us how to send a professional email, and we responded to her and Mrs. Pace.
Then the week of 9/17, we focused on reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. It was a really hard text to understand, but we made it through, and we analyzed her use of rhetoric in the piece. We also took a look at the famous poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost that she alludes to in the excerpt we read. That was pretty cool!

Week of 9/10/2018

The CFA has been graded and added into Inow. Today (9/10) students were given packets for extra practice on the standards they did not master. Mastery would be an 85 or higher for the questions on that particular standard. The packets are due on Friday, September 14, 2018. If the student shows improvement on the extra practice packets, his or her grade(s) will be replaced with the grade received on the packet. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Also this week, we will be reading "A Fable for Tomorrow" and identifying rhetorical devises in the text. Mrs. Evans will be leading class on Wednesday and Friday to teach the student important technology information and how to use their email accounts. Don't forget the early dismissal day on Thursday. Students will be dismissed at 11:45.

Week of 9/3/2018

I hope everyone enjoys the holiday on Monday. This week, we will have our first CFA (Common Formative Assessment) to reassess the standards that were tested on the diagnostic test (RI. 2, 3, and 5) We will also be talking about how these assessments are graded and you will be given a copy of the standards.  On Thursday, we will be attending a meeting with the SROs. There will also be an in school soccer game Thursday. We will end the week reading "Silent Spring" and get ready to start Rhetorical Devices.

The Jungle

This week we have been working on a Lit Lesson over chapter 14 of Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle." The text, activity worksheet, and powerpoint are linked on the right side of the page. We are working on standards RI.2, RI.3, RI.4, and RI.6.
