Dear SCHS Band Families,
With the sweltering temperatures being forecasted this week, many of you may be wondering how we ensure the safety of our band members during rehearsals. At Stewarts Creek High School, the well-being of our students is our top priority, especially during extreme weather conditions. As we head into this week, here’s a closer look at how we manage heat index concerns and keep our rehearsals safe.
Our Approach to Weather Conditions
The SCHS Band follows a clear and consistent approach to handling inclement weather. We want to assure you that, as a general rule, we will never cancel a rehearsal due to weather. Instead, we adapt to the conditions by moving indoors when the heat index climbs too high or when we face rain, lightning, or thunder. This allows our students to continue their preparation in a safe environment while staying on track with their performance goals.
Heat Index Guidelines
As band directors, we adhere strictly to the heat index guidelines set forth by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA), which are the same guidelines that all of our athletic coaches follow. These guidelines are designed to prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure that students remain safe during outdoor activities.
When the heat index reaches certain levels, specific precautions are taken. For example, when it’s extremely hot, we shorten outdoor activities and increase water breaks. If the heat index reaches a critical threshold, we move rehearsals indoors to air-conditioned spaces where students can continue practicing without risk.
Collaboration and Monitoring
We work closely with our athletic director and assistant principal, Mr. Todd Harris, who keeps us updated on the latest weather conditions and TSSAA alerts. His expertise, combined with our use of multiple weather apps, ensures that we make well-informed decisions about where and how rehearsals should take place.
After School Rehearsals (ASR) and Cancellations
After School Rehearsals (ASRs) are only canceled if Rutherford County Schools close or dismiss students early due to impending weather conditions. We understand the importance of these rehearsals, but student safety will always come first. If a cancellation is necessary, we will communicate promptly with parents to ensure everyone is informed.
Stay Informed
We encourage all parents to stay connected with us for updates on rehearsal changes, especially during times like these. Keeping an eye on your emails and our text message channels will help you stay in the loop. Rest assured, your child’s safety is our number one concern, and we’re committed to providing a safe environment for them to thrive in.
Thank you for your continued support as we navigate this challenging weather. Together, we can ensure that our band members stay safe, healthy, and prepared for their upcoming performances.
