Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists
QUILL AND SCROLL SOCIETY was founded as a non-secret honor society at the University of Iowa on April 10, 1926, by renowned pollster George H. Gallup and a group of high school advisers for the purpose of encouraging and recognizing individual student achievement in journalism and academics.
MOTTO
The motto of this Society shall be:
Ye shall know the truth and
The truth shall make ye free.
MEMBERSHIP
Students recommended for membership must meet the following requirements:
- They must be of sophomore, junior, or senior classification.
- They must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and be in the top one-third of their class in general scholastic standing, either for the year of their election or for the cumulative total of all of their high school work.
- They must have done superior work in some phase of journalism or school media work, such as writing, editing, business management, or production.
- They must be recommended by the supervisor, adviser or by the committee governing media.
- They must be approved by the Executive Director of Quill and Scroll.
HONORS
SENIOR CORDS: Students that have been inducted into QSNHS who hold a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, have paid their dues/raised funds, have met all honor society requirements will have the opportunity to wear an honors cord at graduation.
INDUCTION CEREMONY: New members who meet the honor society requirements and have been chosen and approved as a member to the QSNHS will be officially inducted into the honor society in a non-secret induction ceremony in April/May of their first year. This is a formal event to which parents are invited.
