Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists

 
HISTORY

QUILL AND SCROLL SOCIETY was founded as a non-secret honor society at the University of Iowa on April 10, 1926, by renowned pollster George H. Gallup and a group of high school advisers for the purpose of encouraging and recognizing individual student achievement in journalism and academics.  

MOTTO

 The motto of this Society shall be:

                        Ye shall know the truth and
                        The truth shall make ye free.

MEMBERSHIP

 Students recommended for membership must meet the following requirements:

  1. They must be of sophomore, junior, or senior classification.
  2. They must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and be in the top one-third of their class in general scholastic standing, either for the year of their election or for the cumulative total of all of their high school work.
  3. They must have done superior work in some phase of journalism or school media work, such as writing, editing, business management, or production.
  4. They must be recommended by the supervisor, adviser or by the committee governing media.
  5. They must be approved by the Executive Director of Quill and Scroll.

HONORS

SENIOR CORDS: Students that have been inducted into QSNHS who hold a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, have paid their dues/raised funds, have met all honor society requirements will have the opportunity to wear an honors cord at graduation.

INDUCTION CEREMONY: New members who meet the honor society requirements and have been chosen and approved as a member to the QSNHS will be officially inducted into the honor society in a non-secret induction ceremony in April/May of their first year. This is a formal event to which parents are invited.
