SCHS Band Leadership Team Information for 2020-2021

Any returning band members interested in SCHS Band Leadership for the 2020-2021 Academic Year should click the following link to an interest form. Due to the shutdown, a majority of leadership training and activities will take place through distance learning, with online activities and forms for you to fill out. No experience is necessary and all band members who might be interested are encouraged to apply. Live auditions and interviews will take place upon return to school. Should the shutdown be extended, we will inform students about an alternative plan.

Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble Activities

  • Smart Music Activities
      • We will now use SmartMusic for the duration of the shutdown. MakeMusic - the parent company of SmartMusic is giving all students and their schools free access to SmartMusic. You will need to setup your SmartMusic account this week (see Monday evening's email for more information). This will give you lots of opportunities and great assessment tips as you prepare for your ensemble placement audition.

  • Music Theory Activities
      • We will be using a program called Breezin' Thru Theory and Composition for the duration of the shutdown. The account is free thru the duration of the shutdown. Students will need setup their account this week (see Monday evening's email for more information). We will use Breezin' Thru Theory Next Gen Edition (Not the classic notebook).

Each lesson has an accompanying drill. Assignments for this week are the following (which should take you very little time to complete since it should be review):

        Chapter 1 - The Staff - Review Lesson 1-1 through Lesson 1-3. Complete Drills 1a through 1e.

Percussion Ensemble Activities

  • Rudiment Review - All you need is a pair of drumsticks and practice pad, drum, or flat surface for this one. Click the rudiment in bold below which will take you to the Vic Firth/Zildjian Rudiment Education website. You can click the tracks to play along and follow the rudiment all on the same page.

This week, let's use this time to review our basic drum rudiments starting sequentially with classic, the Single Stroke Roll (Click Here).

  • Percussion Podcast -  Discussions in Percussion - An interesting look at today's contemporary percussion scene. This episode features an interview with percussionist Dr. Julie Hill, Music Department Chair at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Click here to access the podcast.

Jazz Band Activities

  • NPR's Jazz Profiles- This documentary program profiles the legends and legacy of jazz. Hosted by singer Nancy Wilson, the program brings to life the vibrant history of the genre through music, interviews, and commentary. The fascinating stories reflected in this series are very human tales that the news junkie or the jazz aficionado can relate to. Jazz Profiles is radio's first and only jazz documentary series. Every show features unusual portraits of jazz musicians with rare interviews.
